Secondary school students receive international awards:
Every year the Hong Kong team to the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) received a year-long training in HKUST Physics before they competed in the Olympiads. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both IPhO and APhO were suspended this year. Nevertheless, with the strong commitment to talented education, the HKUST team continued to train the shadow members of the Hong Kong teams. Our students were glad to have chances to enter the Olympiad arena when they heard that the 4th European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) would be held online during 20-26 July 2020. They joined the event which hosted 257 students from 57 countries from Europe and other continents, and had to write a theoretical and an experimental paper, each spanning 5 hours with mind-boggling questions and Zoom-monitored by the organizers.
Sponsored by the Physical Society of Hong Kong (PSHK), the five secondary school students of Hong Kong achieved pleasing results, winning one silver medal, two bronze medals and two honorable mentions. The silver medalist was Lau Sze-Chun (Diocesan Boys’ School). The bronze medalists were Xu Edward Yanyang (Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School) and Szeto Chun (G. T. (Ellen Yeung) College). The honorable mentions were Leung Chun Fung (G. T. (Ellen Yeung) College) and Gua Allan (King George V School).
